Samsung SDI has presented, at one of their own shows, a new notebook prototype feeded by a “fuel cell” system, which apparently would have a autonomy of no less then one month(yeah, as in 30 days!). Typically for this sort of electric fueling systems is the fact that re-suppling via a power socket, or plug, but by filling the tanks with reactable solutions (good luck with that all you chem wizs out there). Now don’t let your imagination stray to far and believe there will be a process similar to automobile motors, no.The principal is entirely different. The two substances react with each other producing electric power, but which unfortunately dissipates and gets consumed.

Samsung however hasn’t specified if they spoke of a 1 month autonomy under Windows Vista or Windows XP, or if the notebook could be maintained continuously power-on the full 30-31 days of the month. Or where they reffering to February ?

My word… this could be the biggest thing to hit laptops since mobile graphics cards…

something like this could provide the mobile power needed by some of todays more advanced gaming laptops… turning what is now a portable desktop computer into a truly mobile rig… and uptimes of this duration could allow a whole new symbiosis between laptop and pwner…

    bravo Samsung… here’s hoping it’s not just vapourware…

Sure it’s got one month continuous action, but how are we going to recharge it? I’m guessing not many of consumers out there have access to those substances or the measurement tools to make sure the ratios are right. We’d have to buy batteries every month, and who wants that?

This is very interesting to see. Even if not usable in a convenient way for the public (or cost effective) at this point, I bet government agencies or businesses will be all over this type of technology as they’d be able to get over the inconvenience of re-charging hump easier.
