Dell announces the Dell 500 laptop for emerging countries
April 23, 2008
Upon opening a new factory in India, Dell officially announced the new Dell 500 laptop without being very precise regarding its specifications.

Dell did announce earlier this month its intention to produce a new budget priced 8.9 inch laptop, but is this it? There’s not yet so much of a screen size on the model to confirm this. However, the choice for Windows XP Home Edition or Ubuntu Linux, as well as the price tag of just over 600$ seem to indicate an Atom-level hardware. Features that the manufacturer saw fit to announce are an 8-in-1 card reader, media playback buttons and (quote) “a “host of wireless access options” (end quote). A bunch of accessories means higher cost and that might suggest that it is not the 8.9 inch laptop after all, being in fact a solution intended for emerging countries like India or China.
All in all, it seems only time will tell what Michael Dell’s answer to HP’s Mini-Note will be.
